The Journey Into The Study of Masculinity

What brings all of us to the areas of men and masculinitiesis varied to be sure, but a common desire to support the positive developmentof men’s emotional, social, and general well-being seems to be a unifyingconcern most of us bring to the table. Having said that, I would like to takethis opportunity to express what brought me to this area of study and work,both within and outside of student affairs. I hope this offers the chance forothers to recognize similarities or differences, but mostly to share somethoughts on my experiences in an effort to further define what brings us allhere together as a community.

Identifying as a white male with plenty of privilege toboot, I came into college with very little understanding of how the privilege Ihad would impact those around me - or that I even had it. While I wouldeventually shed the most of the privileges associated with being straight andfrom a religion based in Christianity following my coming out experience incollege (actually while I was a Resident Advisor and one of the many reasons Iam in this field today), I still had a while to go before I learned thatunderstanding my identities and how they interacted with the world around mewould be a lifelong learning process.

I walked into grad school solidly in Cass’ (1979) “pride”stage - very excited about being a gay man and taking ownership - highlightsand all - of my newly embraced identity (I should note the irony that thisstage is largely based on white males and it is another example of privilegesince I can so closely identify with such a model). However, that would allcome to screeching halt and somewhat immediate transition into a mix of theacceptance and synthesis stages as I started hanging out with some of the newfolks I had met in my new hometown. Specifically, I was talking to some otherwhite, gay males who made racist and elitist comments that shocked me. Mypride-stage-rose-colored glasses, or naïveté, could not accommodate for gaypeople who were capable of being oppressive or so callously ignorant. Weren’twe all on the same team? Hadn’t I been told ‘this isn’t the oppressionOlympics’ and that we (all oppressed peoples based on race, religion, gender,etc.) were working to end ignorance and oppression?

Obviously, while we would ideally be working toward the samegoal with the same level of concern, this is not the case. I was learning thatprejudice exists within all of us and that we are all at different levels ofawareness and owning our biases. I tried to challenge these individuals thathad made the racist and elitist comments about their assumptions and offered myown process of understanding the privilege I had been given in this world bybeing white, male, identifying as straight (at one time), middle-class,Christian/Catholic, from a college-educated family, and so on. This seemed notto make a difference to them, and I was frustrated.

I was fortunate to process this frustration with some greatmentors who pointed helped me to turn my frustration into the desire to do somethingmore with my fellow white, gay males. Additionally, I began to notice just howmuch the white, male privilege had followed into LGBT culture. Just looking at"Will & Grace" on television, they were white, affluent, college educated,and held any other number of privileged identities. This was also true of whathad been a big part of my coming out experience, watching "Queer As Folk" (the USversion.) Beyond media, leaders of the large LGBT organizations throughout thecountry were also often white men (such as the Human Rights Campaign). Now, Ishould be clear that I do not believe that white, gay men were incapable ofleading an organization or appearing on television and being inclusive, but Iwas alarmed at how little representation there was for people of color andwomen in these areas. Indeed, I work towards being a white, gay man who isinclusive in every respect of my life and believe that is a process.

Another turning point for me was coming across Bell Hooks’book "The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity,and Love." She opened my eyes to the ways in which all genders arenegatively impacted by the limitations involved with male privilege. I couldsee this in my male students who seemed so preoccupied with the approval ofother males for their behavior, and I could identify the ways in which I waslimited in living my own life because of this approval process. After readingand realizing so much about the challenges and opportunities of male privilege,I was overwhelmed. This brings me back to the understanding that working onthis topic is a process, a process where all of our contributions of time andthought will make a difference.

Ultimately, what I am referring to is my desire to betterunderstand my fellow white, gay men and our relationship to privilege andoppression. A desire that is as strong as ever in the work I have done sincegraduate school and intend to continue doing (perhaps in a doctoral program atsome point). This comes from a frustration with the status quo of simplyaccepting that males are generally privileged beings - “boys will be boys” -rather than working towards a recognition of inequalities and taking steps tofacilitate greater appreciation of everyone’s impact on the world around them.

Meeting with some fabulous folks like our National Chair,Osvaldo Del Valle, at a conference in Rhode Island a year ago helped me torealize that there is interest in not only better understanding the phenomenathat lead to the social construction of masculinity and its relationship to powerand oppression, but to inform better practices to encourage theinclusively-minded development of men. This work currently exists in pocketsand with targeted populations, but the work has started which is encouraging!Given the power and privilege that men have in our society, I am so excited forthe energy that seems to surround these discussions. Thank you for taking thetime to visit our blog and I would like to extend an invitation for you toshare with myself why you are involved, whether by commenting on this post orsending me a note.

As noted before, I know there are many reasons that you maybe interested in reading about our work in the MMKC, and I hope that my ownexperience of how I came to be involved in understanding the field of men and masculinitieswill perhaps illustrate (as do the various topics represented in this blog) thefar-reaching impacts these topics have on our society - and the need toincrease the awareness of understanding men as gendered beings will be towardsa society with greater inclusivity.

How Men Express Themselves...Or Do They?

In the 26 years I have been on this earth, I have found that relationships continue to be one of the best places to learn major life lessons. And of the life lessons one can learn when dealing with relationships, heartbreak is probably somewhere at the top of the list. I have been fortunate enough to share my heart with many great men, both as friends and as partners, and they have taught me many things. However, nothing I’ve experienced in the realm of relationships will top finally bolstering the courage to tell someone “I love you,” and hearing this as their response: “I don’t know…I don’t know how I feel…I don’t know how to respond.” And if hearing that response just once wasn’t heartbreaking enough, I’ve heard it multiple times…from multiple men in my life.

Over the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on those very words: “I don’t know.” At first, I felt anger. I felt those words represented no bigger emotional cop out, or deflection. However, the more I look at those three small words through the lens of masculinity development (and the more I talk with close male friends), the more I’ve begun to fear that there may be a painfully simple shred of honesty to them. What if some men truly don’t know how to express themselves because they quite literally don’t have the words?

Social researchers such as Jack Mayer, Peter Salovey, Dan Goleman, Steve Hein, and many others have written extensively on the concept of “Emotional Intelligence” (“EI” for short). By definition, “Emotional Intelligence” is “an innate ability which gives us our emotional sensitivity and our potential for learning healthy emotional management skills” (http://eqi.org/history.htm). Hein, himself, goes on to hypothesize that there exists a duality between a person’s “potential EI” and their “actual EI.” His theory is that every child is born with a natural potential to sense, perceive, and interpret the emotions of others; obviously, the level of natural ability varies from person to person. Hein goes on to explain that one’s “actual EI” is continuously shaped by the environment they grow up in, their life occurrences, and their personal development.

Let’s say a male child is born with an innate ability to interpret and communicate emotions. And then, let’s say, that male child starts learning the “lessons” that many young boys do about “what it means to be a man.” As he grows up, his “actual EI” may or may not be negatively impacted by any combination of factors: intra-family dynamics, lack of male role models, negative male role models, peer pressure, reinforcement of traditional gender roles by authority figures, the media’s representation of men and masculinity, etc. Young male children may also be “taught” what jobs or careers are “acceptable” for them to pursue (i.e. policeman, fireman, businessman, doctor), and which ones tend to be “unacceptable” (i.e. teacher, nurse, artist). These “life lessons” may then impact what courses young men pay more attention in throughout their educational career. How often have we heard headlines and statistics claiming that men still outnumber women in the math and science sectors of the world? How come we don’t hear about men outnumbering women in education, foreign languages, or literature (all places they could bolster their personal vocabulary)? For the better part of their first 18 years, many men suffer at the hands of negative male socialization patterns that may stunt the exploration of their inner emotional life in favor of rationality, logic, and fact.

Come high school and college, these men begin to enter the world of serious relationships, so starting their journey of learning how to build intimacy with another person. Enter Dr. Jim O’Neil’s male gender role conflict theory. Perhaps one of the most challenging elements of MGRC is the element of restrictive emotionality. The most cursory review of men’s issues literature will uncover research linking men’s repression (or avoidance) of emotion, and their lack of help-seeking behavior, to a variety of health problems; in fact, most statistics show that men suffer from higher rates of substance abuse, higher rates of completed suicides, and a lesser likelihood of seeking out resources. So now, potentially for the first time in their lives, these 18- to 22-year-old men have partners asking them to describe how they feel. The intent of the “I don’t know” response very well may be the instinctual male reaction to being asked his feelings, but the impact of such a response can cause a lot of heartache.

The whole point of my rant on emotional expression boils down to this: Many of the interventions and programmatic efforts designed to engage and interrupt the negative effects of male socialization and MGRC deal specifically with providing men a platform through which they can begin to communicate their feelings in a healthy manner. We, as educators, seem to want nothing more than for today’s men to open up, to express, to let the guard of masculinity down. We create discussion groups; we host conferences; and we ask the intentional (yet incredibly difficult) questions. We create counseling and therapeutic techniques and approaches specifically tailored to unraveling the knots that make up hegemonic masculinity. But where in those interventions and discussion groups are we teaching men the emotional vocabulary they will need to communicate their inner thoughts? Why must we spend so much time focusing on “interventions,” when we could very easily start the developmental shift earlier on in these men’s lives by role modeling healthy outlets for communication and emotional expression?

To “not know” one’s emotions is completely natural and okay; but in the realm of healthy, sustained relationships, we eventually must be able to communicate our feelings with our partner (whatever they may be). For some men, the simplicity of this request may prove to be a more difficult challenge than we first thought. As we continue to further explore best practices in the world of men’s issues, I would like to challenge us to find small moments to pause and go back to the basics of human language and expression. And, maybe break out a thesaurus every once and awhile—just to keep us on our toes.

Remember, remember the month of Movember?

It’s the last week of October and I am super excited for Movember to get here. No, that was not a typo you just read, I meant to write “movember.” What is Movember you might be wondering? Movember is a national and international movement to bring awareness to men’s health issues. During the month of November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces. With their mustaches, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Here at my institution—Cal Poly, we are excited to be commencing our first ever campus wide campaign for Movember.

In the Fall issue of the MMKC newsletter, I reminded readers of the challenge I set for our readership during the summer to reach out to other campus constituencies to collaborate on a program revolving our college men. At Cal Poly, our campus motto is “Learn by doing.” It is a great motto and I take it seriously. The Movember Campaign provided a perfect opportunity to actively do something while helping students learn about an important cause. I also practice what I preach, so having remembered the challenge I set forth to our readership, I reached out to other departments on my campus for this endeavor. In the picture above, you will see some of the members of the Cal Poly Movember Campaign Committee. It is made up of colleagues from Men and Masculinity Program and Greek Life. We also made sure to have student members as well. It is the first time that my department (Residential Life and Education) as partnered with these two departments on a program involving our college men. Given the popularity of “No shave November,” we decided to host a mustache growing competition to help raise awareness of men’s health issues. The program we created is as follows:

This Cal Poly Mustache Growing Competition will have three levels:

1. Local-- Residence Hall, Greek Chapter and Student Organization

2. Semi Finals--All Residence Life Championship, All Inter-Fraternity Council, and All Student Life and Leadership.

3. The winners of these semi finals will go to the All Cal Poly Competition to be crowned the champion of our school.

As our contestants’ mustaches grow during the month of November, friends and strangers will ask why they are growing a mustache. These contestants will hand out an educational information card on men’s health issues and begin a dialog on prostate cancer and testicular cancer testing. At the mid-month mark, we will have a social gathering for our contestants to size up the competition and announce the prizes for the end of the month. In Residence Life, each hall’s Community Council has agreed to host and judge their in-hall competitions—another opportunity for collaboration. The Residence Life members of the Movember Committee will judge our All Residence Life competition with the help of our Coordinators of Student Development. During these past four weeks of October, we have distributed teaser fliers, created our competition’s Facebook page, created a Cal Poly team on the Movember site and have organized several informational meetings this week to promote and sign up contestants. Like I said at the beginning of this blog post…I’m super excited.

On a professional note, I must say that this opportunity has provided me an opportunity to work with other colleagues on campus that I normally would not have had an opportunity to partner with. I am getting to know these colleagues, yet, more importantly, I feel that I am also making new friends. It’s a win-win situation.

Let Us Be More Forgiving of Men

Breaking news: people have biases and stereotypes about others based on their perceptions and lived experiences. No surprise, right? What HAS been surprising for me recently has been noticing the assumptions that I make about other men. It actually came to my attention when I was talking with another colleague about conduct hearings, and how some students don't show up. I realized that when a woman chooses not to show up, it is a relatively surprising event. But when a man skips their student conduct hearing, it does not shock me at all. In fact, it reinforces my own stereotypes about college-aged men being irresponsible and disrespectful.

"Pssh, just another pot smoking lax bro who wasted an hour of my hectic work schedule."

Is this you, too? If so, then join in with me in recognizing how detrimental this is in both professional and personal realms. If not, then there is a lot that I can learn from you. I have been recognizing that I have incredibly low expectations for college men, and I've internalized so much of it throughout my young professional career.

On the other hand, I wonder how much of this is impacted by my own growth in gender development. In some ways, it feels similar to how "good whites" distrust other whites who they deem as racist. I wonder how much of this comes down to espousing certain values around masculinity and distancing myself from others who I perceive as obstacles or even enemies. If I am in a meeting with other men, I generally assume that I am the only one who has a "gender lens" on, and is conscious about gender dynamics during the meeting.

I have found some affirming spaces where I can let this guard down, namely the men's discussion group that I am a part of at UVM and the Men and Masculinities Knowledge Community through NASPA. It helps me counter the images and stereotypes of men being disrespectful and irresponsible when I see others who are invested in this work. I am slowly becoming more cognizant of my biases, and checking myself when I elevate myself above other men. I would love to hear whether others can relate with me, or if they have any advice or resources they could provide.

Actually, according to "College Men and Masculinities" by Shaun Harper and Frank Harris III, man’s greatest fear is being laughed at. The authors of this book delve into this issue and more.

"College Men and Masculinities" covers six crucial areas that men struggle with during college, from health and wellness to identity development and gender socialization. This book is a great reference for supporting college men because it gives student affairs professionals theory, research and implications for practice.

Stubborn and Persistent Masculine Beliefs: Insights from a Research Study

A good deal of recent attention has been devoted to understanding college men’s beliefs and perceptions about masculinity, masculine identity, and other aspects of their core sense of self. Despite competing, often contradictory, lists of definitions, we generally agree that masculinity is a socially (versus biologically) constructed notion (Chesebro & Fuse, 2001). Socially constructed as it may be, scholars have debated whether there is an empirical link between physical characteristics, “masculine” behaviors, and masculine identity (e.g., Doyle & Paludi, 1985). Indeed, some argue that it is possible to divorce behaviors from identity, while others maintain their inextricable link (Dilley, 2005). Yet, the weight of evidence, to date, suggests that “every culture (or group) has implicit standards about the appropriate roles that men must enact to be judged masculine” (Franklin, 1984 #130). With this understanding in mind, I set out to conduct a survey study of Black men’s masculine beliefs using an instrument that I developed from existing scales (e.g., Gender Role Conflict Scale, Perceived Masculinity Scale).

Since I was interested in measuring students’ approval of the norms typically associated with heteronormative, traditional male roles and the extent to which they hold such beliefs, all items were placed on a 5-point Likert type scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Just a few results are presented here for the purpose of encouraging discussion. Consider the following statistics from the study’s sample of Black men:

I must admit that I was struck by the sample’s scores on these items as they reflect fairly strong belief in and endorsement of heteronormative, traditional masculine beliefs. In many ways, they represent the very beliefs that many of us have been working to reduce, if not eliminate, in college men. They represent the “Big Wheel,” hyper-macho, misogynistic ideologies that, according to research, give rise to the litany of misbehaviors (e.g., violence, risky sex, drug/alcohol abuse) in which significant proportions of college men engage. So, why do these stubborn masculine beliefs persist among today’s population of college men? And why might Black male collegians strongly subscribe to such norms and beliefs? And what can we do, as educators, to effectively reduce, eliminate, or replace such beliefs with alternate conceptions that represent legitimate avenues to healthy masculine expression? I invite your thoughts and comments.

Lost Men on Campus

Elizabeth Redden, a reporter for Inside Higher Ed, published an article titled, “Lost Men on Campus.” The article describes issues that college men face, such as lower graduate rate compared to women, disengagement in campus leadership positions and overrepresentation among campus judicial offenders.

Frank Harris states, “When we think about acts of violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment on college campuses, overwhelmingly the perpetrators of those acts on our campuses are men. When we talk about how to convince our colleagues that we need to be engaged in these discussions, these are some of the ideas we need to share with them, particularly this last one,” (2009).

The lack of positive male role models, fatherless men and social identity issues has contributed to the issues that college men face. College men need to have a better understanding of what it means to be a man. The college community must provide proactive support to address issues related to masculinity, gender-role conflict and those seeking help.

Non-Heterosexual Identity as Normal?

Recently, I had the opportunity to read the article “Which Way Out? A Typology of Non-Heterosexual Male Collegiate Identities” by Patrick Dilley. Throughout the article Dilley defines several historical and contemporary collegiate identities used to label men with regard to their non-heterosexual identities.

One of the labels in particular struck a cord in my intellectual consciousness. Dilley describes one of these categories or labels as “Normal” (Dilley, 2010). In the study, someone who identifies as “Normal” identifies as heterosexual in a sociocultural context, but still participates in homosexual sexual activity and/or behaviors. Additionally, the “normal” identified individual does not recognize the dissonance between their own self-concept and the sexual behaviors they are participating in (Dilley, 2010).

From my understanding, Dilley asserts that those he interviewed were able to participate fully in the gay sexual experience without a need or desire to identify cognitively or socially with the gay community or gay self-concept. As I read this I began to wonder how feasible it is for this to occur in a socially constructed society that implicitly, and at times explicitly, places negative values on gay sexual behavior. The assumption that one could participate in sexual activity that is oft looked down upon and experience no negative construction of meaning, is a strong assertion.

The question that is more pertinent to me, as a student affairs administrator, is – is this a healthy avoidance of dissonance. Will the separation of behavior from identity continue to manifest itself in other areas of the man’s life? Also, does this separation of behavior and identity allow a man to never fully process and integrate his behaviors into his life. Does this have the potential to prevent a fulfilling life experience?

From another perspective – what are the impacts of this separation on construction of masculinity. Does this continue to perpetuate the idea that to be a “man” you must identify socially as heterosexual? Does this fly in the face of establishing alternate constructions of healthy masculinity?

I don’t personally have solidified answers to these questions, but welcome debate!

Mass Media: Topics in Masculinity

Hello everyone,

As the Technology Chair of the Men and Masculinities Knowledge community it is one of my duties to use technology to help disseminate information on masculinities issues. To assist in this endeavor, I will be posting (periodically) links to articles found on the web from non-academic, mass media publications on the topic of masculinity development/manhood. Within our young field of study, scholars and practitioners sometimes have to depend on non-academic articles to support/reinforce our findings and or supplant our presentations and workshops. I hope these entries assist you with this endeavor and or provide you an opportunity to discover what the discourse is on masculinity issues within popular culture.
